Ceramics Ages 9-11

In this summer camp student will learn the different techniques in clay such as pinching, coiling, slab building, carving, texturing and throwing on the potter?s wheel. Students will use these skills to create many different items; there are no limitations to what they can make or create. The class will focus on function objects as well as sculptural art pieces, and will provide an exciting experience on the fundamentals and nature of clay. Everyone will have many pieces to take home and be proud of for years to come.

Box Town A

Start with a box, and then make all your dreams come true. Over the course of the week, the camp will construct a town out of cardboard boxes (large,Refrigerator, dishwasher boxes, etc). Individuals may build their own box house or may work in teams to build box mansions. As well, the entire group will work together to build a school, a hospital, and any other buildings that the group deems necessary. Roads can be drawn on a ground of canvas paper. We will take breaks through the week for instruction in basic drawing and painting skills (representational drawing and painting), and for slideshows and short films, animations, etc. The goal is for the children to have fun while also absorbing basic principles of fine art.

NSCAD Funny Book

The group will work together to create a humorous publication of comic strips, cartoons, and stories. Children may work independently on their own contribution or team up with others but all will participate in the editorial and publication stages. Everybody will take home a copy of the FunnyBook.

Colours From the Garden

If you love art and nature then join us in this adventure as we explore the art of textiles. Playing with flowers, thread and fabric, together we will use those materials to create toys, bags and clothes. Going on nature walks we will collect flowers and plants as well as learn how to finger knit, tie-die, sew and more.

Sew Fun

Get creative and explore your own personal style while learning how to sew! Throughout the week we will make fun projects to decorate your room while learning elements of colour and design. Camp participants will be encouraged to think about what makes them an individual and how they can express that uniqueness in what they create. Projects will use both machine and hand sewing techniques, and will explore sewing using mixed media. Campers will also work throughout the week to design their own fabric that will be used in a project the final day of camp. Students will learn how to use recycled materials and are encouraged (but not required) to bring old clothing or other textile items they would like to repurpose.

Alternate Realities and Weird Worlds

Explore the depths of space and time, enter the third dimension, encounter your evil twin and strange alien creatures. In this course students will use multiple mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and sculpture to create surreal and experimental mixed media works that exist somewhere in between reality and the imagination. Advanced Cartoons, Comics, and Doodling

This class is perfect for students who love storytelling and art. Students will learn the fundamentals of sequential art (comics, graphic novels, and manga) and explore techniques for character and word creation as they develop their own unique style of drawing and narration. Doodling, a largely misunderstood activity which recent studies suggest may have signifcant cognitive benefts, will be emphasized as a fun tool for the creative process. Students will share each others’ characters and ideas through group activities, and will collaborate on a printed comic art zine. Extra copies will be available for friends and family!

Aspiring Jaques Cousteau? Ever wanted to be a Mermaid? Or just wanted to live underwater?
