Students will become familiar with concepts, skills and materials that are basic to painting, and will learn how drawing can play an important role in painting. Drawing and painting techniques, colour mixing, painting application, composition, colour values, and contrasts will be considered. Exploring different toy making techniques we will make the strange creatures from our imagination come to life. Using Everyday reclaimed materials we will learn to make kites, gliders, stuffed animals and other strange creatures based on our own designs. Class limit is 15.

NEW Saturday Ceramics (ages 12-14)

In this course students will learn the different techniques in clay such as pinching, coiling, slab building, carving, texturing and throwing on the potter's wheel. Students will use these skills to create many different items; there are no limitations to what they can make or create. The class will focus on function objects as well as sculptural art pieces, and will provide an exciting experience on the fundamentals and nature of clay. Everyone will have many pieces to take home and be proud of for years to come.

Graphic Novel Fundamentals (ages 15-18)

This course will serve as a primer to help teens excel at comic creation. With a focus on in-class exercises, students will develop essential skills for writing and illustrating graphic novels. Areas of study will include the following components:perspective, expressive anatomy, narrative structure, and economic and dynamic page layout. These components will dramatically enhance students' ability to create any kind of comic or graphic novel from manga, to simple cartoons, to superhero comics or other ground-breaking visual literature.

NEW Sketchbook: an Artist's Practice (ages 15-18)

Creating an Artist Practice will explore the importance of sketchbooks and creating variety within one's practice as an artist. Students will keep a sketchbook throughout the semester in which they will experiment with ideas and mediums and learn how to translate what is in their sketchbook into larger pieces of art. Class will include illustration, painting, ceramics and sculpture with an emphasis on medium experimentation. There will be guided projects in this class, however, students will be encouraged to create and work on their own projects throughout the semester.
